Ginger i planted in March and harvested in November.

Type- yellow common ginger

Ginger loves: sheltered spot from wind, filtered sunlight or indirect, warm weather, humidity and rich moist soil.

Doesn’t like:  frost, direct sun, strong winds, soggy wet soil.

When to plant:  Plant rhizome pieces (part with growth buds, look like little horns)  late winter early spring 3-4 “ deep with buds facing up.

Plant in container at least 14” in diameter, will hold 3 ave. rhizomes.  Use 75 % compost mixed with 25 % garden soil.  Keep moist while growing.  No fertilizer is needed unless you have poor soil.

Harvesting:  You can start harvesting small pieces after about 4 months,  These pieces will be at the green stage and is a littler milder than the mature stuff.  Towards the end of summer the leaves will start to die off.  Reduce watering  and let the soil dry out this will start to cure the ginger root.  When all the top growth has died off it is time to harvest.  Pull out the roots/rhizomes and re plant some of the buds or just leave some in and add fresh compost.  Now it is ready for next season.  If left in ginger will flower the second year.
