Hibiscus sabdariffa
AKA “Florida Cranberry, Thai Red Sorrel, Jamaican Sorrel” even though it is native to west and central Africa.
All parts of the plant are edible, leaves, seeds stems, flowers and flower calyxes (the red gelatinous outer part of seed pod) They are most popular for the calyxes which are used to make cranberry sauce, jam and teas to name a few uses. They are heat tolerant and make a great Florida summer crop. They are frost/freeze sensitive but will come back after a hard freeze. Can grow to 7 feet tall. Flowers appear in September- October.

Good plants, must prune or they get heavy and break. Not cold hardy but easy to collect seeds for next year.

These were started in spring and started blooming this fall. The roselle calyx did not look like the photo on the cover of the seed packet. They stayed very small, an inch at most. They were not the red cranberry color, they remained mostly green with some burgundy spots on them. I am very disappointed with them, I pulled them up and put them out for the yard pickup. I do not recommend.

I also have cranberry hibiscus that you might have received instead, they are easily confused. I am harvesting calyxes right now from the same seed stock i sell.
