Physalis pruinosa
I was recently gifted one of these plants and I am addicted to these sweet little gems! Ground cherries are actually considered a tomato. Related to tomatillos. They are sweet with a hint of pineapple flavor. A unique and delicious addition to salsa, if they make it inside!
The plants have short spreading vines, and stay low to the ground, needing about 2-3 feet between each plant. Husked cherries will fall off when brown and at their best flavor. Grow the same way as a tomato plant. These do well in large pots which help keep the fruit off the ground. Will produce heavily all season until the hottest months like tomatoes. If kept healthy and from freezing, will produce again when temperature is right since they are a perennial.
